CONCERNING THE DESIGNATION OF NATALIA TORO DAY.


WHEREAS, The State of Colorado takes great pride in its youth and the quality of its schools; and

WHEREAS, The study of science and the advancement of scientific research contribute to the advancement and well­being of society; and

WHEREAS, The Intel Science Talent Search, formerly run by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, is the nation's oldest and most prestigious pre­college science scholarship competition, rewarding and encouraging young students to seek excellence in the various fields of science; and

WHEREAS, Natalia Toro, a student at Fairview High School in Boulder, earned praise, recognition, and accolade for herself, her school, and the state of Colorado when she was awarded the first prize in the 1999 Intel Science Talent Search; and

WHEREAS, At fourteen years of age, Natalia is the youngest recipient in the award's fifty­eight year history; and

WHEREAS, Natalia's love of science and her natural curiosity led to her first place prize on the topic of "Independent analysis of evidence for nu_mu <­­> nu_tau oscillations in the SuperKamiokande atmospheric neutrino data", which has been deemed a notable contribution to the field of high­energy physics; and

WHEREAS, The Intel Science Talent Search is viewed as the junior Nobel Prize by many, and, in fact, five previous recipients have gone on to become Nobel Prize winners; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty­second General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That it is fitting that the General Assembly honor those students who strive for excellence, to serve as an example for other Colorado students.

That the General Assembly wishes to encourage the young people of Colorado to do well and succeed in science and other academic fields.

Be It Further Resolved, That the State of Colorado hereby declares this day, March 26, 1999, as Natalia Toro Day in honor of her achievements and academic excellence.
