CONCERNING PROFESSOR DENNIS VAN GERVEN, RECIPIENT OF THE 1998 COLORADO PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR AWARD.


WHEREAS, Skillful, enthusiastic, and innovative teachers forever change the lives of countless students for the better by encouraging curiosity and understanding and by contributing to the development of mind and spirit; and

WHEREAS, The U.S. Professors of the Year Program, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and administered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, is the nation's most highly respected program to recognize outstanding teaching faculty; and

WHEREAS, The Colorado Professor of the Year represents the thousands of talented university and college instructors throughout the state of Colorado who serve their students, their community, and their state with dedication; and



WHEREAS, Professor Dennis Van Gerven was one of nine nominated from the entire body of faculty members at all Colorado institutions of higher education to receive the 1998 Colorado Professor of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, Professor Van Gerven has served as a faculty member of the University of Colorado at Boulder for over twenty years; and

WHEREAS, In his time as a faculty member of the University of Colorado, Professor Van Gerven has been recognized multiple times for his achievements in teaching, including receipt of the Dean's Superior Merit Award, the Honors Program Teaching Award, and the President's Teaching Scholar Award; and

WHEREAS, Professor Van Gerven has "captivated the hearts and minds of many CU­Boulder students" as the Director of the Honors Program and Professor of Anthropology; and

WHEREAS, It is professors such as Dennis Van Gerven who contribute to a legacy of educational excellence in undergraduate teaching in the state of Colorado and who carry on the tradition of making our state system of higher education the envy of many states and other nations; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty­second General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That the General Assembly of the State of Colorado hereby recognizes Dennis Van Gerven, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, upon being named the 1998 Colorado Professor of the Year and hereby commends Professor Van Gerven for his many years of dedicated service to the University of Colorado, its students, and the community.


















Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Resolution be sent to Professor Dennis Van Gerven, Chancellor Richard L. Byyny, and the President of the University of Colorado.
