HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 99-1025

CONCERNING HONORING THE METROPOLITAN STATE COLLEGE OF DENVER MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM.

WHEREAS, On March 20, 1999, the Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD) Roadrunners men's basketball tournament played in the NCAA basketball Division II Final; and

WHEREAS, No other team in Colorado has advanced this far in any NCAA men's basketball division; and

WHEREAS, With their appearance in the NCAA Division II Final, the 1998­99 Roadrunners men's basketball team is Colorado's most successful NCAA basketball team ever; and

WHEREAS, The Roadrunners won the first regional championship in school history with their victory in the North Central regional tournament of the NCAA Division II; and

WHEREAS, The Roadrunners captured the first conference championship in MSCD history, winning the 1999 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championship; and

WHEREAS, The Roadrunners' appearance in the NCAA Division II Final was the first nationally televised appearance by any athletic team in MSCD history; and

WHEREAS, The NCAA Division II Final is the second­most watched NCAA division championship, second only to the NCAA Division I Final Four championship games; and

WHEREAS, Seven of the Roadrunners' top players, including all five starting team members, will be returning to play in the 1999­2000 season; and

WHEREAS, The Roadrunners' 1999­2000 men's basketball team is expected to be one of the top­ranked Division II teams in the country; and

WHEREAS, The Roadrunners' ended their regular season with a 25­5 record, the second­most wins in school history, and were ranked eighteenth in the nation; and

WHEREAS, With 28 victories overall this season, the Roadrunners tied a school record; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty­second General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:

That we, the members of the General Assembly, extend our congratulations to the players and staff who comprise the Metropolitan State College of Denver Roadrunners men's basketball team for their success in the 1998­99 season.

Be it further resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mike Dunlap, head coach of the Roadrunners basketball team, Sheila Kaplan, president of Metropolitan State College of Denver, and to each member of Colorado's Congressional delegation.
