HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 99-1008
CONCERNING THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT
OF TRANSPORTATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 1999 SEASON FOR NONVIOLENCE
PROGRAM.
WHEREAS, The M. K. Gandhi Institute for
Nonviolence was established in 1991 to create awareness that individuals
can improve their lives and thereby their communities through
daily choices of nonviolent action; and
WHEREAS, The 1998 Season for Nonviolence commemorated
the 50th anniversary of the assassination of M. K. Gandhi
and the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, The 1999 Season for Nonviolence runs from
January 30 through April 4, 1999, during which time local organizations,
families, and individuals may partner to spread the word of a
nonviolent lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, The Institute communicates with and encourages
relationshipbuilding among likeminded organizations
statewide, nationwide, and internationally to work cooperatively
and build bridges between ethnic, racial, religious, and other
groups in memory of M. K. Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives
of the Sixtysecond General Assembly of the State of Colorado,
the Senate concurring herein:
That the Colorado General Assembly believes that
the philosophy of the Season for Nonviolence supports the adopted
Statewide Transportation Policies specifically related to Customer
Focus, Leadership, Partnership, Safety, and Social Responsibility.
Be It Further Resolved, That the General Assembly encourages the Colorado Department of Transportation's participation in the 1999 Season for Nonviolence program and to strive to incorporate the philosophies into its daily activities.
