Summary of Legislation

This bill revises statutes governing the duties of a board of county commissioners to make certain reports available to the public. The bill specifies certain conditions for a board to post certain fiscal reports on the Internet. The bill specifies how the board is to notify the public of these reports and the minimum time period for which the reports must be posted

Local Government Impact

This bill requires any board of county commissioners that posts any information on the Internet to post reports of county expenditures, county employee salaries, and financial statements on the Internet. The bill repeals the requirement for a board of county commissioners to post these reports in a local newspaper which will reduce annual legal advertising costs. The amount of any resulting reduction in legal advertising costs has not been estimated for all counties. Table 1 provides a sample of legal advertising costs that were incurred by some counties during 1997.
