TITLE:            CONCERNING THE DESIGNATION OF CANDIDATES FOR A PRIMARY ELECTION.

Summary of Assessment

The bill would provide for procedures in the political party nominating process. A written acceptance of a candidate would be filed with the current certificate of designation. The Secretary of State would have to notify the state central committee of a party 53 days before the primary of an assembly’s failure to file a certificate of designation. The central committee would then have to file or direct the presiding officer of an assembly to file the certificates along with the written acceptances at least 51 days prior to the primary.

The bill would regulate the conduct of political parties in their nominating process. The additional filing of written acceptances and the verification by the Secretary of State would not require additional resources within the Secretary of State’s office. Therefore, this bill is assessed as having no fiscal impact.
