TITLE:            CONCERNING SUBORDINATE OFFICERS OF COUNTY SHERIFFS.



Summary of Assessment


            This bill, effective July 1, 1999, revises statutes governing the liability and authority of a county sheriff as follows:

 

               clarifies circumstances under which a sheriff is responsible under official bond for the default or misconduct of any undersheriff or deputy;

               authorizes a sheriff to discharge and discipline undersheriffs and deputies, and to adopt written policies and rules relating to such officers; and

               states that an undersheriff's or deputy's religious beliefs, marital status, racial or ethnic background, or participation in community affairs shall not affect employment practices, promotions, or dismissals.


            This bill will not affect state or local government revenue or expenditures. Therefore, the bill is assessed as having no fiscal impact.
