TITLE:            CONCERNING THE EMPLOYMENT OF PROBATIONARY TEACHERS.

Summary of Assessment

The bill includes provisions which modify evaluation procedures for a probationary teacher accordingly:

requires a school district to provide a probationary teacher an abbreviated personnel performance evaluation; and

permits a school district to elect to provide a complete personnel performance evaluation.

Additionally, the bill clarifies a probationary teacher's employment as a full school year if the teacher was employed the last 90 days of the school year by adding a reference to the last semester or its equivalent. A probationary teacher shall have a complete personnel performance evaluation in order to have that academic year deemed a full school year or employment.

The bill relaxes current requirements pertaining to the employment of probationary teachers. It does not impact the workload in either the Department of Education or local school districts. The bill is assessed as having no fiscal impact.
