SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 98-018

URGING THE COLORADO GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO SET ASIDE AN ANNUAL APPRECIATION DAY FOR ALL COLORADO PEACE OFFICERS.


WHEREAS, The members of the Sixty­first General Assembly and the citizens of Colorado recognize the importance of peace officers in our daily lives; and

WHEREAS, The members of the law enforcement agencies within the state of Colorado have an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of the state of Colorado; and

WHEREAS, It is important that all citizens of Colorado know and appreciate the problems, duties, and responsibilities of peace officers; and

WHEREAS, It is important that peace officers throughout Colorado recognize their duty to serve the people of this state by safeguarding life and property, protecting citizens against violence, disorder, and deception, and ensuring peace in the great state of Colorado; and

WHEREAS, The members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Colorado also acknowledge the contributions made by retired or fallen peace officers; and

WHEREAS, It is fitting and appropriate for the citizens of Colorado to join together in appreciating peace officers, past and present, who by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities have rendered a dedicated service to their community and, in doing so, have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty­first General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That we, the members of the General Assembly of the state of Colorado, hereby proclaim that the day of April 27th be annually recognized as Colorado Law Enforcement Appreciation Day; and

Be It Further Resolved, That we, the members of the General Assembly, urge the citizens of the state of Colorado, on April 27, 1998, to join peace officers from around the state in driving with their automobile headlights on, to show appreciation for peace officers' honorable and dedicated service.

Be It Further Resolved, That all citizens are encouraged to attend the event to be held on the west steps of the Colorado state capitol at 9 a.m. on April 27, 1998, and annually thereafter, to commemorate Peace Officer Appreciation Day.

Be It Further Resolved, That Peace Officer Appreciation Day also serve as an opportunity to acknowledge Peace Officer Memorial Day, a day nationally recognized as May 15, in recognition of those officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the supreme sacrifice or who have been disabled in the line of duty.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the following organizations: Colorado Sheriffs Association, Colorado Chiefs of Police, and Colorado State Patrol.
