INTRODUCTION AND CONSIDERATION OF RESOLUTION

The following resolution was read at length and given immediate consideration:

HR98-1008 by Representatives Leyba and Reeser--Concerning proclaiming April 3, 1998, "National Equal Pay Day".

WHEREAS, More than thirty years after the passage of the federal "Equal Pay Act of 1963", an unfair gap between the salaries of women and men continues to exist; and

WHEREAS, Nationally, women are paid 74 cents for each dollar a man earns, although African­American women earn 65 cents and Latina women earn 57 cents for each dollar a man earns; and

WHEREAS, April 3rd marks the day on which American women's wages for 1998, when added to their entire 1997 earnings, finally equal what men earned in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Fair pay is a long­term investment with a big payoff in terms of stronger employee loyalty, better production, and enhanced retirement opportunities; and

WHEREAS, Families are stronger and more secure, business prospers, and American values and economy are strengthened when women are paid fairly; and

WHEREAS, On April 3, 1998, women across the nation will join together to call attention to the inequity between wages of women and men; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty­first General Assembly of the State of Colorado:

That we, the members of the Colorado House of Representatives, proclaim April 3, 1998, as "National Equal Pay Day".
