SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 97-5

CONCERNING CONGRATULATING THE DENVER CITYWIDE MARCHING BAND ON ITS APPEARANCE IN THE 1997 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE.

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band has brought great honor to the residents of Denver and to the whole state of Colorado by performing in the 1997 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band was formed in 1980 through the combined efforts of students, parents, teachers, and the Denver community; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band consists of two hundred members from the city's ten high schools, bringing young people together from across the city and fostering civic pride and understanding; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band Parents Corporation provides 13,000 volunteer hours and $75,000 per year to support the efforts of these young people; and

WHEREAS, Every member of the Denver Citywide Marching Band completes a four-week music camp during the summer and one practice session a week all year; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band has provided countless hours of inspiration and entertainment to the residents of Denver, the citizens of Colorado, and the citizens of this country; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band has marched at the Liberty Bowl, the Copper Bowl, and the Alamo Bowl; and

WHEREAS, The Rose Parade, which was seen by one million people in person and on television by another five hundred million people in both the United States and ninety other countries, is a shining moment for the members of the band and the pinnacle of their success; and

WHEREAS, The members of the Denver Citywide Marching Band, through their own hard work and self-discipline, raised all of the money necessary for their participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade; and

WHEREAS, The members of the Denver Citywide Marching Band were required to rise at three a.m., be in formation by six a.m., and march for two and a half hours over the five mile Tournament of Roses Parade; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Citywide Marching Band's appearance at the tournament of Roses Parade was the first appearance by a Denver band in the Parade's one hundred eight year history, and the band was one of only thirteen bands not from California to perform in this year's Parade; and

WHEREAS, The performance of these young people has demonstrated to the nation and to the world the spirit of Colorado and our values of hard work, cooperation, and determination; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-first General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That we, the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Colorado General Assembly extend our warmest congratulations to the Denver Citywide Marching Band on their appearance at this year's Tournament of Roses Parade.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the Board of Directors of the Denver Citywide Marching Band Parents Corporation, the principal of each Denver high school, the Denver School Board, and the Superintendent of the Denver Public Schools.
