SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 97-30

WELCOMING THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE DENVER SUMMIT OF THE EIGHT.

WHEREAS, On June 20 through June 22, 1997, the city and county of Denver and the state of Colorado will proudly host the 23rd annual meeting of the Group of Seven; and

WHEREAS, the White House, the state of Colorado, and the city and county of Denver have agreed that this summer's meeting will be named the Denver Summit of the Eight in recognition of the location of the meeting and Russia's increased role in the Summit; and

WHEREAS, The annual showcase event will bring together the leaders of the world's seven leading industrialized nations, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as Russia and the European Union as observing members; and

WHEREAS, This Summit provides an important occasion for world leaders to discuss international trade, relations with developing countries, new economic issues, and the direction of established international organizations; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of its importance in the process of international relations, the annual Summit since its inception has attracted the attention of thousands of international journalists and many countries throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, Numerous Colorado businesses and individuals are assisting in organizing and sponsoring the Summit; and

WHEREAS, The Denver Summit of the Eight will focus the eyes of the world on Denver as an international city and highlight Colorado as a financial, transportation, technology, and communications hub in the Rocky Mountain West, attracting more than 7,000 delegates, journalists, and security personnel to the Denver area; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty­first General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, commend the delegates of the Denver Summit of the Eight for their commitment to the international community and extend our wishes to them for a successful and productive Summit.

Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Resolution be sent to the Prime Minister of Canada, the President of the European Union, the President of France, the Chancellor of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Japan, the President of Russia, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the President of the United States, Governor Roy Romer, and Denver Mayor Wellington Webb.
