CONCERNING THE RECOGNITION OF JOURNALIST RUTH G.
LEHMAN.
WHEREAS, Ruth G. Lehman, a Colorado native, has been
a newspaper executive and editor in Colorado for 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman holds a law degree from Columbia University in New York and practiced law in Denver for 10 years before she and her husband, Ed, purchased the Longmont newspaper in 1957, which then had a circulation of under 4,000; and
WHEREAS, During her years with the newspaper, Ms.
Lehman balanced her work as controller and editor of the editorial
pages with her community and professional duties; and
WHEREAS, In the community, Ms. Lehman was a founding
member and president of the St. Vrain Valley Family YMCA and a
founding member of the Longmont Council for Arts and has provided
invaluable service to the Longmont Chamber of Commerce, the Heart
of Longmont Development Committee, and the Longmont Foundation;
and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman also served as legislative head
for the Colorado Commission on the Status of Women, on the boards
of the Colorado Legal Aid Foundation and the Colorado Council
on Economic Education, and as a trustee for the Denver Symphony
Society; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman is currently on the boards of
directors of the Denverbased Mountain States Employers Council
and the Colorado Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman was elected president of the
Colorado Press Association in 1982, being the first woman to hold
that post in 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman also served on a PressBar
Relations Committee for the American Society of Newspaper Editors
and as treasurer of the Inland Daily Press Association in Chicago,
which honored her with its Distinguished Service Award in 1995;
and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman is currently vicepresident
of Lehman Communications, Inc., which owns the Longmont Daily
TimesCall, Loveland Daily ReporterHerald, and CaZon
City Daily Record, which have a combined
paid circulation of over 45,000; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lehman's outstanding achievements in
journalism were recognized in February of 1997 when she was awarded
the coveted Newspaperperson of the Year Award at the Colorado
Press Association's annual convention; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixtyfirst
General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives
concurring herein:
That we, the members of the General Assembly, hereby
express our recognition for and offer our sincere congratulations
to Ruth G. Lehman for her vast achievements and prestigious awards
in the field of journalism and for her invaluable contributions
to the Colorado community.
Be it further resolved,
That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to Ruth Lehman, Lehman
Communications and the Colorado Press Association.
