SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 97-22
CONCERNING THE 75TH ANNUAL GREELEY INDEPENDENCE DAY
STAMPEDE.
WHEREAS, Rodeo is a central part of Colorado's culture
and heritage; and
WHEREAS, The 75th annual Greeley Independence Day
Stampede will be held from June 25 through July 6, 1997; and
WHEREAS, The Greeley Independence Day Stampede, originally
named the "Spud Rodeo" and later the "Go West with
Greeley Rodeo", has evolved from a 1day celebration
that attracted 2,500 people in 1922 to a 12day celebration
with a projected attendance of 350,000 people for 1997; and
WHEREAS, The 75th celebration of the Greeley Independence
Day Stampede will include 7 professional rodeos, 6 concerts and
night shows, a demolition derby, a stampede fiesta and Mexican
rodeo, a kids rodeo, a 4th of July parade, a steam locomotive
train trip, an antique show, a stampede eucharist, a fireworks
show, barbeques and flapjack feeds, country dances, a trail ride,
a pony express ride, a cowboy church service, a Miss Rodeo Colorado
pageant, and much more; and
WHEREAS, The Greeley Independence Day Stampede is
the world's largest 4th of July rodeo; and
WHEREAS, The Greeley Independence Day Stampede was
ranked 10th in the world in 1996 by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys
Association; and
WHEREAS, The efforts of numerous volunteers known
as "Wranglers" and the sponsorship of local, regional,
and national businesses have enabled the Greeley Independence
Day Stampede to thrive over the years; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixtyfirst
General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives
concurring herein:
That we, the members of the General Assembly, commend
the Greeley Independence Day Stampede Committee, the City of Greeley,
Weld County, and the numerous volunteers for their efforts and
wish to show our support for the 75th annual Greeley Independence
Day Stampede and encourage all citizens to take part in this historically
significant celebration of our state's heritage and our nation's
independence.
