CONCERNING HONORING THE GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL MONUMENT FOR BEING CHOSEN AS PARK OF THE YEAR IN 1996.


WHEREAS, The Great Sand Dunes National Monument, in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, was established by President Herbert Hoover in 1932 by a presidential proclamation intended to preserve the Dunes for future generations; and

WHEREAS, The Great Sand Dunes National Monument attracts more than 300,000 visitors every year to view the impressive and constantly changing range of sand dunes, some of which rise more than 750 feet; and

WHEREAS, The Great Sand Dunes National Monument represents a unique part of Colorado's natural history; and

WHEREAS, Many projects and renovations were undertaken at the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in 1996, including the renovation of the visitor's center and the establishment of new research programs; and

WHEREAS, The many achievements at the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in the past year were made possible by the many partnerships and organizations associated with the Sand Dunes, including: Alamosa County, GOCO, the Colorado Historical Society, the Southwest Parks and Monuments Association (SPMA), and the Friends of the Dunes; and

WHEREAS, The Friends of the Dunes, a local organization comprised of citizens from the San Luis Valley, has volunteered innumerable amounts of time and energy to the visitor's center renovation, the biological and geological research programs, the summer concert series, and more; and

WHEREAS, As a result of superior performance, the Great Sand Dunes National Monument was designated as Park of the Year in 1996 by the SPMA from among 53 other national parks; and

WHEREAS, The support of the above­mentioned organizations and the dedication of the National Park Service staff at the Great Sand Dunes National Monument made this honor possible; and

WHEREAS, The designation also honors the state of Colorado; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty­first General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That the General Assembly hereby recognizes and honors the Great Sand Dunes National Monument for being chosen Park of the Year.



Be it further resolved, That a copy of this Joint Resolution be transmitted to the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, in care of William E. Wellman, Superintendent of the Monument; and to John E. Cook, Regional Director of the Intermountain Region National Park Service.
