BY REPRESENTATIVES Morrison, Gordon, Saliman, Grossman, Gotlieb, Dyer, Kaufman, Kreutz, Leyba, Tate, Snyder, and George.

WHEREAS, Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it; and

WHEREAS, From 1933 to 1945 the National Socialist regime in Germany conducted a systematic and mechanized program of murder and genocide against Jews, Catholics, clergy, communists, socialists, homosexuals, gypsies, and other minorities and political opponents in an event that has come to be called the Holocaust; and

WHEREAS, Never previously has a government combined unreasoning hatred and prejudice with the industrial inventions of the 20th century with the goal of wiping religious minorities and other opponents from the face of the earth; and

WHEREAS, Twelve million people were killed in Nazi death camps including twothirds of the Jews of eastern Europe; and

WHEREAS, Both before and after the Nazi Holocaust other societies have engaged in genocide against religious or ethnic minorities, and that said genocidal wars are continuing to this day, showing that human society has not eradicated the fear and hatred in our species that sometimes comes out in unspeakable ways; and

WHEREAS, The people of Colorado should be eternally vigilant in recognizing the seeds of bigotry, racism, prejudice, and demagoguery with a view to preventing the rise of movements based on hatred and oppression; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixtyfirst General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:

That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, hereby proclaim the week of May 4 through 10, 1997, as Holocaust Awareness Week and call on all citizens of Colorado to remember the dark night of World War II's Holocaust and resolve that such horrors not be allowed to go unpunished.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Holocaust Awareness Institute of the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Denver and to the AntiDefamation League of B'nai B'rith in Denver, Colorado.
