STATE OF COLORADO

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 97-1042
WHEREAS, The General Assembly recognizes that United
Airlines is the oldest airline in the United States, having started
flying in 1926; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines began service to Colorado
in 1937 with two flights and twenty employees; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines now serves Colorado with
three hundred and nineteen daily departures, linking Colorado
to one hundred domestic and thirtynine international airports
in thirty countries, and three United States territories on five
continents; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines is the largest employeeowned
company in the world, with more than eightyfive thousand
employees worldwide; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines employs more than eight
thousand Coloradans; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines's annual Colorado payroll
is more than three hundred and fifty million dollars; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines exemplifies the model corporate
citizen by expending millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer
hours in philanthropic activities; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines has established the world's
largest flight training center in Colorado; and
WHEREAS, United Airlines has signed a thirtyyear
lease at Denver International Airport and made a commitment to
serve Colorado well into the next century, and pays one hundred
and seventy five million dollars annually in rents and landing
fees; and
WHEREAS, The state of Colorado is fortunate to have
United Airlines providing passenger and cargo links to the world;
and
WHEREAS, on May 15, 1997, United Airlines will celebrate
sixty years of air service to Colorado; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives
of the Sixtyfirst General Assembly of the State of Colorado,
the Senate concurring herein:
That May 15, 1997, be declared United Airlines Day to salute United Airlines and the eight thousand Coloradans who have contributed to its success.
