HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 97-1015


WHEREAS, On February 17, 1897, the founding members of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, which developed into what is now known as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), first met in Washington, D.C., to address the dangers which threaten the well­being of children; and

WHEREAS, The National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer association in the United States working exclusively on behalf of children and youth; and

WHEREAS, For 100 years, the mission of the PTA has been to support and speak out on behalf of school children and youth in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children, to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children, and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation; and

WHEREAS, As a result of its efforts, the PTA has fostered the enactment of child labor laws, the juvenile justice system, and toy safety and automobile safety belt and child restraint legislation; and

WHEREAS, The PTA participated in the founding of kindergarten as a part of the public educational system, the nationwide school lunch programs, the dispensation of the Salk Polio Vaccine, and a national HIV/AIDS education program for parents; and

WHEREAS, The purpose of Parent Teacher Association 100th Anniversary Week is to honor and thank the PTA and its members, past and present, for their tireless effort, dedication, and achievements on behalf of American children and their families; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty­first General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:

That the General Assembly hereby proclaims that the week of February 16th through 22nd, 1997, be "Parent Teacher Association 100th Anniversary Week in Colorado Public Schools".

Be it further resolved, That a copy of this Joint Resolution be transmitted to the president of the Colorado Parent Teacher Association.
