Archuleta County is named, in part, afterhim. https://www.archuletacounty.org/101/History-of-Archuleta-County In 1876 he was elected a member of the first house of legislature of the newly admitted State and, by re-election, he served for two terms as the representative of Conejos and Costilla Counties. In 1883 he was elected to the State senate from Conejos County and served for 4 years. During the second year of his service he introduced the bill providing for the separation of Archuleta from Conejos County. It was his intention to name the new county “Pagosa,” but his friends in the senate objected and urged the adoption of“Archuleta” as the county name.
