Bill Summary (Note: This summary applies to this bill as introduced and does not necessarily reflect any amendments that may be subsequently adopted.) Prohibits a school district from employing as a physical education teacher a person who does not hold a physical education endorsement on his or her teacher license or who is not highly qualified as determined by the school district. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Colorado: SECTION 1. Part 2 of article 63 of title 22, Colorado Revised Statutes, is amended BY THE ADDITION OF A NEW SECTION to read: 22-63-201.5. Employment contracts - physical education teachers. (1) In addition to the requirements of section 22-63-201, the board of a school district shall not enter into an employment contract with any person as a physical education teacher, except in a junior college district or in an adult education program, unless such person either: (a) Has a license endorsement for physical education issued pursuant to section 22-60.5-106; or (b) Is otherwise highly qualified, as determined by the school district. (2) In order to be highly qualified for purposes of paragraph (b) of subsection (1) of this section, a person shall have completed at least twenty-four hours of professional development in physical education or passed an assessment approved by the state board of education establishing the necessary competency in physical education. SECTION 2. Safety clause. The general assembly hereby finds, determines, and declares that this act is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, and safety.
