CONCERNING THE U.S.S. COLORADO. WHEREAS, Many Colorado men and women have honorably served in the United States Navy and other branches of the military in the defense of our country; and WHEREAS, Colorado is grateful to all members of the United States armed forces for their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families; and WHEREAS, The Secretary of the Navy announced in April 2012 that a new Virginia-class submarine would be named the U.S.S. Colorado and designated SSN-788; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Colorado will stretch 377 feet and, in addition to its traditional attack submarine roles, will have accommodations for Navy SEALs and carry Tomahawk missiles with a striking distance of 900 miles; and WHEREAS, It has been nearly two generations since a United States naval warship has borne the proud name of the great state of Colorado; and WHEREAS, This will be the fourth United States naval warship so christened, following the great traditions of the battleship U.S.S. Colorado (BB 45), which proudly served from 1923 to 1947, earning seven battle stars during World War II; the armored cruiser U.S.S. Colorado (ACR 7), which was renamed the U.S.S. Pueblo and served during World War I; and the three-masted frigate U.S.S. Colorado, which saw service during the Civil War; and WHEREAS, This will be the first submarine to bear the name of the great state of Colorado; and WHEREAS, The Navy expects to christen the U.S.S. Colorado in early fall 2016 and plans to commission the submarine in spring 2017; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventieth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That we, the members of the General Assembly, express our greatest pride in the newest U.S.S. Colorado and wish the greatest successes for her crew. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to Governor John Hickenlooper; the U.S.S.
