MEMORIALIZING FORMER SENATOR STEPHANIE TAKIS. WHEREAS, Our respected former colleague, Stephanie Takis, a past member of the Colorado Senate and House of Representatives, departed this life on August 5, 2014; and WHEREAS, Senator Takis was born October 16, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Andrew and Katherine Takis; and WHEREAS, Senator Takis attended Granite High School and the University of Utah before moving to Washington, D.C., to become a congressional staffer; and WHEREAS, Senator Takis worked as a congressional staffer for 15 years, serving 5 different Democratic members of Congress, before moving on to work for a Senate committee and then the Congressional Affairs Office of the United States Department of Commerce; and WHEREAS, After moving to Colorado and settling in Aurora, Senator Takis became involved in her community and was appointed to the Aurora Election Commission, the Aurora Citizens Advisory Budget Committee, the Adams County Community Services Committee, and was chair of the Spirit of Aurora Board for several years; and WHEREAS, In 1989, Senator Takis launched her political career with a successful race for an at-large seat on the Aurora City Council where she served until 1992; and WHEREAS, In 1996, Senator Takis ran and was elected as state representative from Aurora, representing Adams County, and served until 2000; and WHEREAS, During her time as a state representative, Senator Takis sponsored legislation authorizing construction of the Colorado State Veterans Home at Fitzsimons, giving recognition to Teen Courts and making them eligible for grant funding, and authorizing the state to accept Fitzsimons Army Medical Center land from the Federal government; and WHEREAS, In 2000, Senator Takis ran and was elected as state senator for senate district 25, representing Adams County, and served until 2008; and WHEREAS, During her time as a state legislator, Senator Takis served on many committees, including the Business Affairs and Labor and Finance Committees for the House of Representatives and the Business Affairs and Labor and Appropriations Committees for the Senate; and WHEREAS, Senator Takis will be remembered for her effectiveness as chair of the Transportation Committee, the Transportation Legislation Review Committee, and the Legislative Audit Committee, where she was known as a watchdog over government spending; and WHEREAS, Senator Takis was a tireless supporter of her community and her continued work on senior's and veteran's issues, property management, and good governance proved her ability to work successfully across the aisle; and WHEREAS, Senator Takis was well respected by colleagues on both sides of the aisle and will be remembered for her hard work and accomplishments; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Seventieth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That, in the death of Stephanie Takis, the people of the State of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Seventieth General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of her family and pay tribute to a woman who served her state well and faithfully. Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Joint Memorial be sent to her sister, Andrea Colness; her brother-in-law, Jerry Colness; her nephew, Andrew Colness; Mayor of Aurora, Steve Hogan; the Aurora City Council; the Aurora Colorado Women's Hall of Fame; and Congressman Ed Perlmutter. ____________________________ ____________________________ Bill L.
