CONCERNING SUPPORT FOR THE MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION. WHEREAS, Since the founding of our country, the United States military has performed services critical to the security of our great nation; and WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps, one of the oldest branches of the nation's military establishment, has always been central to these services; and WHEREAS, Veterans of the Marine Corps have consistently made personal sacrifices, up to and including their lives, in order to preserve the United States of America; and WHEREAS, Family members of these veterans have also consistently made significant sacrifices in order to support the veterans; and WHEREAS, Many of the children of these Marines and their families do not have the means to afford the costs of higher education in order to honor their parents and to prepare themselves to make further contributions to their country; and WHEREAS, The state of Colorado, since receiving statehood in 1876, has contributed men and women to play active roles in the defense of their country, often at great personal cost; and WHEREAS, The state of Colorado always has a significant need for capable, ambitious, and patriotic citizens who are properly trained to lead our state and nation into the future; and WHEREAS, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1962 with the express purpose of providing financial assistance for postsecondary education for the children of United States Marine veterans and for the children of United States Navy Corpsmen who have served with Marines; and WHEREAS, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has since grown to be the nation's oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships for military children; and WHEREAS, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has provided more than 33,000 scholarships to young men and women at a value exceeding $90 million; and WHEREAS, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation in 2014-2015 offered assistance to 2,200 students in the United States, including 50 students in Colorado; and WHEREAS, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation offers funds for any qualified type of formal postsecondary training, including certified trade schools and special academies; and WHEREAS, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides special consideration to the children of qualified veterans who have been severely wounded or killed since September 11, 2001; and WHEREAS, The scholarship funds provided by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation make it possible for virtually all of these students to receive the benefits of post-secondary education, thus contributing to the development of future leaders of our state, our country, and our society; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Seventieth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the Seventieth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, proudly recognize and support the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation for its continuing focus on the betterment of the state of Colorado by providing educational opportunities for the children of United States Marines and for the children of United States Navy Corpsmen who have served with Marines and indirectly providing support for all licensed postsecondary educational institutions in the state of Colorado; and That we encourage all the state's citizens to support this foundation and education in general, and also the many sponsors who make it possible for the foundation to help these students achieve their maximum potential and to patriotically serve their state and their nation. ____________________________ ____________________________ Bill L.
