CONCERNING THE RECOGNITION OF MARCH AS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. WHEREAS, Cancer of the colon is one of the most preventable forms of cancer; and WHEREAS, Nine out of 10 colon cancers could be prevented or successfully treated with regular colon cancer screening; and WHEREAS, About one-third of adults over the age of 50 are not being screened; and WHEREAS, Consequently, colorectal cancer is the leading cancer killer among nonsmoking men and women in the United States; and WHEREAS, The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age; and WHEREAS, More than 90 percent of cases occur in people aged 50 or older; and WHEREAS, A person who has a close relative who has had colon polyps or colon cancer or a person who has inflammatory bowel disease, a genetic syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis or hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, or colon polyps is at a higher risk of developing colon cancer; and WHEREAS, Because most people with colorectal cancer have no symptoms, it is important to be screened for colorectal cancer through endoscopic screening or high-sensitivity stool testing; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Seventieth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, hereby establish the month of March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. ____________________________ ____________________________ Bill L.
