MEMORIALIZING FORMER REPRESENTATIVE DON FRIEDMAN. WHEREAS, Our respected former colleague, Don Friedman, a past member of the Colorado House of Representatives, departed this life on August 11, 2013; and WHEREAS, Representative Friedman was born March 21, 1930, in Denver, Colorado, to Louise and Lester Friedman; and WHEREAS, Representative Friedman earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan College and went on to earn a Master's Degree in Labor Relations from the University of California, Berkeley; and WHEREAS, In 1962, Representative Friedman ran for his first of seven terms as state representative from Denver and served until 1976; and WHEREAS, In 1976, Representative Friedman ran for congressional office and experienced his only political loss; and WHEREAS, As active community leader, Representative Friedman was a founding member and past president of Temple Micah and former board president of the B'nai B'rith Lodge, and he also served as a board member of the Anti-Defamation League, University of Denver's Bridge Project, and the Hemophilia Foundation; and WHEREAS, Representative Friedman, a third generation Denverite, was well known for being a talk radio host on channels KOA, KIMN, and KTLN; and WHEREAS, Perhaps because of his radio host background, during his time in the House of Representatives, Representative Friedman was, according to his wife Jeanne Friedman, "brief in his remarks at the podium, often quoted, and wasn't above throwing in humor to make a point"; and WHEREAS, Representative Friedman served on many committees during his time in the legislature, including the Finance, Appropriations, and House Services committees, and he was also a past chair of the Joint Budget Committee; and WHEREAS, Representative Friedman is also remembered for sponsoring the first clean air legislation in the nation; and WHEREAS, In addition to his service in the legislature, Representative Friedman also served on the Denver Water Board, consulted for the Environmental Protection Agency, and consulted for the Colorado Commission on Higher Education; and WHEREAS, Known for his sense of humor and wit, Representative Friedman was well respected by colleagues on both sides of the aisle and will be remembered for his intellect, humor, and accomplishments; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of the State of Colorado: That, in the death of Don Friedman, the people of the State of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the House of Representatives of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and pay tribute to a man who served his state well and faithfully.
