Concerning registration with the department of revenue of distinguished license plates issued to members of the Colorado general assembly. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Colorado: SECTION 1. In Colorado Revised Statutes, 42-3-209, amend (2) as follows: 42-3-209. Legislative license plates. (2) (a) (I) Upon application of an owner of either a passenger car or a truck not over sixteen thousand pounds empty weight showing that such the owner is a member of the general assembly of the state of Colorado, the department may specially register the vehicle and assign to such the owner in lieu of the distinct registration number specified in section 42-3-113 (1) (a), registration plates bearing: (A) A number together with appropriate words or letters indicating that such owner is a member of the general assembly of the state of Colorado The letter "H" if the member is a representative or the letter "S" if the member is a senator; and (B) The number of the senatorial or representative district of the member. (II) The letter and number combination in subparagraph (I) of this paragraph (a) is the owner's registration number. (b) A member of the general assembly is eligible for special registration and license plates issued under this subsection (2) for the term that the member is elected to serve in office; except that the registration and plates expire when the person leaves office for any reason. SECTION 2. Act subject to petition - effective date - applicability. (1) This act takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on the day following the expiration of the ninety-day period after final adjournment of the general assembly (August 6, 2014, if adjournment sine die is on May 7, 2014); except that, if a referendum petition is filed pursuant to section 1 (3) of article V of the state constitution against this act or an item, section, or part of this act within such period, then the act, item, section, or part will not take effect unless approved by the people at the general election to be held in November 2014 and, in such case, will take effect on the date of the official declaration of the vote thereon by the governor.
