CONCERNING RECOGNIZING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMISTICE MARKING THE END OF THE KOREAN WAR. WHEREAS, On June 25, 1950, Communist North Korea crossed over the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea with approximately 135,000 troops, thereby initiating the Korean War; and WHEREAS, On June 27, 1950, President Harry Truman ordered the United States Armed Forces to help the Republic of Korea defend itself against the North Korean invasion; and WHEREAS, Approximately 5,720,000 United States citizens, including many from Colorado, served in all branches of the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War; and WHEREAS, These soldiers were committed to fighting the spread of communism in Korea and throughout the world and protecting the ideals of democracy; and WHEREAS, The combined efforts of American military personnel and the international coalition of forces involved in the war were able to drive the North Korean armies back across the 38th parallel, ensuring freedom for the people of South Korea; and WHEREAS, The hostilities ended in a cease-fire marked by the signing of the armistice at Panmunjom on July 27, 1953, and today the peninsula still technically remains in a state of war; and WHEREAS, Casualties of the United States during the Korean War included 54,260 deaths, including nearly 300 Coloradans; 92,134 wounded; and 8,176 listed as missing in action or prisoners of war; and WHEREAS, These men and women served their country with honor and dignity in the Korean War, and the legacy of their courage and selfless sacrifice should be remembered; and WHEREAS, Since 1975, the Republic of Korea has invited thousands of American Korean War veterans, including members of the Korean War Veterans Association, to revisit Korea in appreciation for their sacrifices; and WHEREAS, In the 60 years since the armistice marking the end of the Korean War, the Republic of Korea has emerged from a war-torn economy into one of the major economies in the world and one of the largest trading partners of the United States; and WHEREAS, The Republic of Korea is among the closest allies of the United States, having contributed troops in support of United States operations during the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, while also supporting numerous United Nations peacekeeping missions throughout the world; and WHEREAS, Since the end of the Korean War era, annually more than 28,500 members of the United States Armed Forces have served in the United States Forces Korea to defend the Republic of Korea against external aggression and to promote regional peace; and PAGE 2-HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 13-1010 WHEREAS, The United States welcomed many Korean immigrants both before and after the war, and Colorado is now home to more than 18,000 Korean-Americans; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That we, the members of the General Assembly: (1) Recognize the historical importance of the 60th anniversary of the armistice marking the end of the Korean War on July 27, 1953; (2) Honor the noble service and sacrifice of the United States Armed Forces and the armed forces of allied countries that served in Korea since 1950 to the present; and (3) Encourage all Coloradans to participate in commemorative activities to pay solemn tribute to, and to never forget, the veterans of the Korean War. ________________________________________________________ Mark Ferrandino John P.
