CONCERNING RECOGNITION OF CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION MONTH. WHEREAS, The month of February 2013 has been designated Career and Technical Education Month by the Association for Career and Technical Education; and WHEREAS, Profound economic and technological changes in society are rapidly reflected in the structure and nature of work, thereby placing new and unique responsibilities on the state's educational system; and WHEREAS, Career and technical education provides Americans with a school-to-careers connection and prepares and supports a capable, well-educated workforce and, as a result, fosters productivity in business and industry and contributes to America's leadership in the international marketplace; and WHEREAS, Career and technical education helps students in middle school, high school, and college apply their academic skills in areas such as reading, writing, science, and mathematics, along with their workplace readiness skills, to practical, meaningful situations, thus enhancing the quality of their education, helping to retain under-represented youth in schools, and giving all students leadership opportunities in their career fields and in their communities; and WHEREAS, Career and technical education offers individuals lifelong opportunities to learn new skills, which prepare them for postsecondary opportunities and provide them with high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand career choices; and WHEREAS, The ever-increasing cooperative efforts of career and technical educators with business and industry stimulate the growth and vitality of the local economy and that of the entire nation by preparing graduates for career fields forecasted to experience the largest and fastest growth in the next decade; and WHEREAS, Colorado career and technical education programs are a vital part of the state's education system, and 39% of high school students from over 160 school districts are enrolled in one or more career and technical education programs; and WHEREAS, Student success in Colorado career and technical education programs is impressive; more than 147,000 secondary and postsecondary students in Colorado are enrolled in career and technical education programs, and a high percentage of the students who complete a career and technical education program report that, one year after finishing the program, they are either employed in jobs related to their field of study or continuing their education; and WHEREAS, Career and technical education in Colorado is rigorous; nearly two-thirds of high school students enrolled in a career and technical education program enter into some kind of postsecondary program, and the nearly 35,000 postsecondary students enrolled can choose from more than 700 career and technical education programs; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, proclaim the month of February as Career and Technical Education Month. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to the Colorado Association for Career and Technical Education, the Colorado Association of Career and Technical Administrators, the Colorado Community College System, Aims Community College, Colorado Mountain College, Western Colorado Community College, and the following area technical colleges: Emily Griffith Technical College, Delta-Montrose Technical College, and Pickens Technical College. ____________________________ ____________________________ John P.
