MEMORIALIZING FORMER SENATOR JAMES MICHAEL ROBERTS. WHEREAS, Our respected former colleague, James Michael Roberts, a past member of the Colorado State Senate, departed this life on October 6, 2012; and WHEREAS, Senator Roberts was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, on September 9, 1938, graduated from Englewood High School in Englewood, Colorado, and pursued an education at the University of Colorado and the University of Wyoming School of Law; and WHEREAS, After receiving his Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming School of Law, Senator Roberts worked for the state of Wyoming in the Office of the Attorney General; and WHEREAS, Senator Roberts pursued further education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, earning his Master of Laws degree; and WHEREAS, In 1967, Senator Roberts received the Dupont Fellowship to continue graduate legal study at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia; and WHEREAS, Senator Roberts also contributed to the legal field by teaching both at the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota; and WHEREAS, In 1969, Senator Roberts married Mary Sue Philpott of Beckley, West Virginia, and soon thereafter moved to Denver, Colorado; and WHEREAS, After relocating to Denver, Senator Roberts worked in private law practice and later served in the federal government as the regional director of the legal services administration; and WHEREAS, In 1980, Senator Roberts relocated to Loveland, Colorado, where he established a private law practice and served his local community by sitting on the planning commission and library board; and WHEREAS, In 1990, Senator Roberts was elected to the Fifty-eighth General Assembly and served in the Colorado State Senate for four years, representing the people of Larimer and Weld counties; and WHEREAS, During his time in the Colorado legislature, Senator Roberts served on many committees, including the Finance; State, Veterans, and Military Affairs; Appropriations; and Education committees; and WHEREAS, In 1999, Senator Roberts moved to West Virginia to enjoy his retirement in the foothills of Greenbrier County; and WHEREAS, Senator Roberts was known as a dedicated public servant who had an inquisitive mind and a keen interest in history and politics; and WHEREAS, It is fitting that we, the members of the Senate of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly, pay tribute to the dedicated service of Senator James Michael Roberts and express our deep regret and sorrow occasioned by his death; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of the State of Colorado: That, in the death of James Michael Roberts, the people of the state of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the Senate of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and pay tribute to someone who served his state well and faithfully.
