CONCERNING CELEBRATION OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF GIRL SCOUTS, AND, IN CONNECTION THEREWITH, DESIGNATING 2012 AS THE "YEAR OF THE GIRL" IN THE STATE OF COLORADO. WHEREAS, The Girl Scout movement began on March 12, 1912, when Juliette ''Daisy'' Gordon Low, a native of Savannah, Georgia, gathered 18 girls to provide them the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually; and WHEREAS, Today, more than 50,000,000 women in the United States are Girl Scout alumnae, and 3,300,000 girls and adult volunteers are active members; and WHEREAS, In Colorado, the organization includes 30,000 girls, of whom nearly 30% are from economically disadvantaged, underserved, and at-risk communities; 9,000 volunteers; and thousands of alumnae; and WHEREAS, Across the state of Colorado, Girl Scouting reaches all 64 counties, with Girl Scout offices in Colorado Springs, Denver, Durango, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, and Pueblo, and mountain camp properties near Bailey, Estes Park, Red Feather Lakes, Rye, and Woodland Park; and WHEREAS, Sixty Colorado Girl Scouts earned the Girl Scout organization's highest honor, the Gold Award, in 2011 by carrying out projects that make a measurable and sustainable difference in their communities; and WHEREAS, In Colorado, Girl Scouts offers cutting-edge programs such as the "STEM Squad", which profiles careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; "Power Up", a national bullying-prevention program created in Colorado; "Fight Like A Girl Scout", another program created in Colorado that addresses sexual and physical abuse; "Earth Hour" energy conservation events; outdoor programs at all 10 camp properties; and the ever-popular Girl Scout cookie program, which earned Girl Scouts $2.48 million in profits in 2011 for their activities; and WHEREAS, Girl Scouts provides lifelong benefits to its members by helping them to acquire the courage, confidence, and character to excel in their lives and careers; and WHEREAS, Two-thirds of the nation's most accomplished women in public service and 80 % of highly successful businesswomen were Girl Scouts; and WHEREAS, The Girl Scouts organization is the premier expert on the healthy growth and development of girls and ensures that important issues affecting girls and young women are brought to the public's attention and addressed through public policy at the national, state, and local levels; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly: (1) Recognize the importance of empowering girls to lead with courage, confidence, and character; (2) Congratulate Girl Scouts on its 100th anniversary; and (3) Proclaim 2012 as the ''Year of the Girl'' in the State of Colorado. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to Stephanie Foote, Interim President & Chief Executive Officer, Board Chairperson, Girl Scouts of Colorado; Anna Maria Chavez, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts USA; Laurie A.
