CONCERNING HONORING COLORADANS LIVING WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, AND, IN CONNECTION THEREWITH, RECOGNIZING MARCH 14 AS "MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AWARENESS DAY". WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, progressive, autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord; and WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, the protective cover that surrounds the nerve cells, which causes nerve impulses to be slowed down or stopped; and WHEREAS, The symptoms of multiple sclerosis may include tingling, numbness or pain in the limbs, blurred or double vision, muscle weakness, poor balance, fatigue, or forgetfulness; and WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis affects each person differently, and often acts in an unpredictable manner; and WHEREAS, More than 10,000 Coloradans suffer from multiple sclerosis, and it is vital that all citizens understand the disease and its effects on the population; and WHEREAS, While multiple sclerosis is not a fatal disease, and while some individuals with multiple sclerosis are able to lead full and productive lives, there remains no cure; and WHEREAS, The state of Colorado recognizes the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and its Colorado-Wyoming chapter for its dedicated efforts on behalf of those affected by multiple sclerosis, recognizes those who are affected by the disease, and supports increasing awareness in order to find a cure for this devastating disease; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly: (1) Take this opportunity to recognize those Coloradans living and coping with multiple sclerosis; and (2) Recognize March 14, 2012, to be "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day" in the state.
