CONCERNING THE RECOGNITION OF ACHIEVEMENTS BY THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO. WHEREAS, The University of Colorado (CU) has contributed to Colorado and beyond since 1876, educating more than 358,000 students who have become catalysts in business, arts, health, and community growth; and WHEREAS, CU's campuses serve Colorado, the nation, and the world through leadership in high-quality education and professional training, public service, advancing research and knowledge, access to top-tier faculty, and state-of-the-art health care; and WHEREAS, Economic development officials agree that a well-trained workforce is one of the top priorities of companies seeking to relocate or expand, and, in 2011, CU awarded 9,605 Bachelor's degrees, 3,771 Master's degrees, 623 Doctorate Professional Practice degrees, and 481 Doctorate Research degrees; and WHEREAS, CU generates $6 billion in economic impact annually for Colorado's economy through its demand for goods and services and is responsible for an estimated additional 30,000 jobs outside of the university; and WHEREAS, In fiscal year 2010-11, CU Technology Transfer registered 250 invention disclosures, 253 U.S. patent applications, $3.9 million in license revenue, and launched 11 startup companies; and WHEREAS, CU researchers received more than $790 million in sponsored research funding in 2010-11 to support their research, scientific equipment, and salaries for researchers and their staff; and WHEREAS, In 2010-11 CU's average institutional financial aid award per student was $2,207, compared to $990 at other similar public universities, and total financial aid was $120 million; and WHEREAS, CU is helping itself with its Creating Futures fundraising campaign, which has raised $1.1 billion toward its $1.5 billion goal; approximately 98 percent of those funds are earmarked by the donor, adding value to CU in the form of scholarships, endowed faculty positions, program and research support, and buildings; and WHEREAS, University of Colorado Boulder academics enable undergraduate and graduate students to put their knowledge to use in numerous areas of study, ranging from archaeological finds in the Arctic to improving the classroom experience to working with NASA to conduct research in space; and WHEREAS, University of Colorado Colorado Springs is a residential academic and research mainstay in central Colorado, partnering with major corporations and federal agencies to provide leading-edge, high-tech education in concentrations ranging from business to theater to nursing outreach programs for rural areas; and WHEREAS, University of Colorado Denver, which awards the most graduate degrees in the state, has strengths in business, public affairs, computer science, art, and digital media, and is a leader in sustainability on campus and in its curriculum; and WHEREAS, The Anschutz Medical Campus is a state-of-the-art education, research, and patient care facility and one of the largest academic health centers in the West; with its five schools -- the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and the newest School of Public Health -- the Anschutz Medical Campus teaches approximately 3,600 students per year, thus producing the health care workforce of tomorrow for the people of Colorado; and WHEREAS, University of Colorado Health is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report and many other rating agencies; it is internationally respected for its exceptional teams of medical specialists, its remarkable medical outcomes, and its overall clinical excellence; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That the members of the General Assembly of the state of Colorado recognize the vital importance of higher education and the critical role that the University of Colorado plays in providing a world-class quality education system and in producing an educated workforce for the state, the Rocky Mountain Region, and the United States. ____________________________ ____________________________ Brandon C.
