WHEREAS, The PeaceJam Foundation, an international educational organization founded in 1996 in Denver, Colorado, brings together Nobel Peace Prize recipients to work personally with youth to encourage civic engagement, to foster global citizens, and to inspire a new generation of young leaders committed to making positive contributions to their communities and the world; and WHEREAS, PeaceJam is the only organization in the world that has Nobel Peace Laureates working directly with youth to provide year-long, ongoing educational curricula from kindergarten through college; and WHEREAS, In September 2006, to commemorate ten years of positive global change, ten Nobel Peace Laureates and more than 3,000 students from 37 countries convened in Denver to launch PeaceJam's ten-year Global Call to Action campaign; and WHEREAS, The Global Call to Action was designed to initiate solutions to what PeaceJam saw as the ten greatest challenges to the survival and well-being of our planet: Equal access to water and other natural resources; ending racism and hate; halting the spread of global disease; eliminating extreme poverty; social justice and human rights for all; rights for women and children, and their role as leaders; restoring Earth's environment; controlling the proliferation of weapons; investing in human security; and breaking the cycle of violence; and WHEREAS, The following year, Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff, the founders of the PeaceJam Foundation, were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by six Nobel Peace Laureates; the organization was again nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010; and WHEREAS, Currently, twelve Nobel Peace Laureates - the 14th Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rigoberta Mench£ Tum, Oscar Arias, Adolpho P‚rez Esquivel, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Betty Williams, Jos‚ Ramos-Horta, Aung San Suu Kyi, Sir Joseph Rotblat, Jody Williams, and Shirin Ebadi - serve as members of the PeaceJam Foundation; and WHEREAS, To date, more than 600,000 young people have participated in PeaceJam curricula and programs, leading to nearly 1,000,000 new service projects in countries around the globe; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the General Assembly: (1) Applaud the PeaceJam Foundation for fifteen years of education and service to the global community, and for the inspiration and initiative it has sparked within young people everywhere; (2) Recognize PeaceJam founders, Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff, as well as the current staff of PeaceJam, for their energy, sacrifice, and perseverance in the face of uncertain times, for the call of a greater good; (3) Express our support of PeaceJam's ten-point Global Call to Action, and call on all Coloradans to work to effect changes daily, in their homes, their classrooms, their neighborhoods, and beyond; and (4) Recognize April 20, 2012, as "PeaceJam Day" in Colorado, and wish the PeaceJam organization many more years of success and service in our community. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to the Honorable John Hickenlooper, Governor; the Honorable Michael Hancock, Mayor, City of Denver; Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff, founders of the PeaceJam Foundation; the PeaceJam Foundation; and to the members of Colorado's Congressional delegation.
