CONCERNING NAMING A PORTION OF THE FRASER RIVER THE "EISENHOWER MEMORIAL REACH". WHEREAS, Dwight David Eisenhower served as the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and as the 34th President of the United States; and WHEREAS, Eisenhower's wife, Mamie Doud, was from Denver and through her family he was introduced to Aksel Nielson who, with Carl Norgren, would later purchase Byers Peak Ranch; and WHEREAS, Eisenhower first made his way to the Byers Peak Ranch in Grand County, Colorado, in 1952 and returned each year until his heart attack in September 1955; and WHEREAS, Eisenhower's passions when visiting Colorado were painting; cooking flapjacks, trout, and steaks; and fly fishing, which occupied most of his time; and WHEREAS, Eisenhower enjoyed fishing in the Fraser River and especially its tributary, St. Louis Creek, which he referred to as his "home water" when visiting Colorado; and WHEREAS, While in Colorado, Eisenhower conducted official business, including signing multiple bills into law and hosting national and world leaders, thereby leading the Fraser Valley, along with other Colorado locations, to become known as his "Western White House"; and WHEREAS, Eisenhower was a welcome guest throughout Fraser Valley, and his visits to the area were and remain a source of community pride; and WHEREAS, The Fraser River is a vibrant part of Colorado's natural beauty that drew Eisenhower and millions of other visitors to our state; and WHEREAS, Modern-day residents of Grand County have invested in the Fraser River, conducting projects to improve habitat and installing a sculpture of the former President Eisenhower fishing in a Fraser town park adjacent to the river; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly: (1) Wish to recognize and celebrate the Fraser River and Fraser Valley as treasured parts of Colorado's history and natural heritage; (2) Designate the part of the Fraser River from the bridge crossing at Rendevous Road to the bridge crossing at County Road 8 as the "Eisenhower Memorial Reach"; and (3) Recognize the authority of the Colorado Department of Transportation to accept and expend gifts, grants, donations, and federal funds for the purposes of the initial placement of signs along the road to mark the designated portion of the Fraser River as the "Eisenhower Memorial Reach". Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to the Grand County Board of Commissioners; Fraser Board of Trustees; Mike King, Executive Director of the Department of Natural Resources; the Colorado River Headwaters Chapter of Colorado Trout Unlimited; Donald E. Hunt, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Transportation; Grand County Historical Association; General John Eisenhower, President Eisenhower's son; Dwight David Eisenhower II, President Eisenhower's grandson; Susan Eisenhower, Mary Eisenhower, and Barbara Eisenhower, President Eisenhower's granddaughters; and Kristi Martens, Manager of Cozens Ranch Museum. _________________________________________________________ Frank McNulty Brandon C.
