MEMORIALIZING FORMER SENATOR TED L. STRICKLAND. WHEREAS, Our respected former colleague, Ted L. Strickland, a past member of the Colorado General Assembly, departed this life on March 14, 2012, at the age of 79; and WHEREAS, Ted Strickland was born September 17, 1932, in Austin, Texas; and WHEREAS, Before his career in politics, Senator Strickland served in the United States Army and worked as a petroleum information specialist; and WHEREAS, In 1968, Senator Strickland was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives from Adams County, and two years later he was elected to the state Senate; and WHEREAS, Senator Strickland went on to serve 26 years in the legislature, including 24 years in the Senate, and was Senate President from 1983 to 1992; and WHEREAS, In addition to serving as Senate President, Senator Strickland also served as the Assistant Majority Leader from 1971 to 1972, Senate President Pro Tempore from January to July 1973, and Acting Lieutenant Governor from July 1973 through 1974, replacing Lieutenant Governor Vanderhoof when he became governor after Governor Love resigned; and WHEREAS, Senator Strickland ran for governor of Colorado in 1978 against incumbent Governor Dick Lamm and again in 1986 against Roy Romer, who said of Senator Strickland, "Ted was a friend of mine before I ran against him, and he was a friend of mine after I ran against him. I cared about him because he was a tremendously good human being who always tried to do the right thing."; and WHEREAS, Between 1986 and 1992, Senator Strickland was very active in various other governmental positions outside the Colorado legislature, including serving on the governing board of the Council of State Governments, as president of the National Conference of State Legislatures, and as the presidential appointee to the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, among other positions; and WHEREAS, In 1996, Senator Strickland was elected to the Adams County Board of Commissioners and was re-elected in 2000; and WHEREAS, Within the community, Senator Strickland served as a past director of both the Denver Rescue Mission and the Colorado Humane Society, and he was active in geology and petroleum associations; and WHEREAS, Senator Strickland was known for his adept reasoning, work ethic, and strong character, and was considered "the kind of guy who fought as hard as he could for his point of view, but when it was over, he moved on -- no grudge," according to former United States Senator Wayne Allard; and WHEREAS, It is fitting that we, the members of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly, pay tribute to the dedicated service of Senator Strickland and express our deep regret and sorrow occasioned by his death; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That, in the death of Ted L. Strickland, the people of the state of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and pay tribute to a man who served the state well and faithfully.
