CONCERNING THE DESIGNATION OF FEBRUARY 13, 2012, AS "ONE VOICE AGAINST CANCER DAY", AND, IN CONNECTION THEREWITH, HONORING CANCER PATIENTS, SURVIVORS, AND THEIR FAMILIES AND REMEMBERING THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN LOST TO CANCER. WHEREAS, In 2012, it is estimated that more than 1.6 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in this nation, taking the lives of nearly 577,190 Americans, with 173,200 of these deaths caused by tobacco use alone; and WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than 22,820 Coloradans will be newly diagnosed with cancer in 2012; and WHEREAS, Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Colorado; and WHEREAS, In 2012 alone, it is estimated that 7,190 Coloradans will lose their lives to cancer, when, with increased education, screening, and access to health care, 50% of these cancer deaths could be prevented; and WHEREAS, The cancer community in Colorado is united and relentless in pursuit of its mission to defeat cancer by working with lawmakers to create hope for those affected by cancer; and WHEREAS, Cancer patients face countless challenges associated with their diagnoses, including physical, emotional, financial, and day-to-day challenges; and WHEREAS, People without access to quality, affordable health care are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer, resulting in significantly worse health outcomes for low-income and uninsured cancer patients; and WHEREAS, The five-year survival rate for cancer is 67%, up from 49% thirty years ago, thanks to cancer research as well as life-saving cancer prevention, screening, early detection programs, and treatment programs; and WHEREAS, It is essential to preserve the quality of life and dignity of all people who have struggled with cancer and who often feel isolated, stigmatized, and misunderstood; and WHEREAS, Volunteers and members of the Colorado cancer community work diligently every day to advocate on behalf of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers so that one day cancer will be eliminated as a major public health issue; and WHEREAS, States have a leadership role to play in fighting cancer through public education, increased awareness of early detection through screening, and improvements in affordability and access to medical care; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly: (1) Honor cancer patients, survivors, and their families; (2) Remember those people who have been lost to cancer; and (3) Declare Monday, February 13, 2012, as "One Voice Against Cancer Day" in the state of Colorado.
