MEMORIALIZING FORMER SENATOR JAMES BEATTY. WHEREAS, Our respected former colleague, James "Jim" Dean Beatty, a past member of the Colorado Senate, departed this life on October 14, 2010, at the age of 81; and WHEREAS, Senator Beatty was born in La Junta, Colorado, on September 3, 1929, to Jason and Clara Beatty and was the oldest of three boys; and WHEREAS, He spent most of his young life in Colorado and graduated from Springfield High School in Springfield, Colorado, in 1947; and WHEREAS, Senator Beatty received his Bachelor's degree in Business from Adams State College in Alamosa in 1951 and soon after enlisted in the Air Force, attended Officer Candidate School, and received his commission as First Lieutenant; and WHEREAS, In 1952 Senator Beatty married Peggy Callihan and to this union son Bruce and daughter Lila were born, and on February 14, 1987, Senator Beatty was married to Mary Regan and became stepfather to Robert and Mike Regan; and WHEREAS, After completing his service with the Air Force, Senator Beatty enrolled at the University of Colorado, where he received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1956; and WHEREAS, In July 1956, Senator Beatty arrived in Fort Collins to work as a trust officer for Poudre Valley Bank, and his law career began in January 1960 when he joined the Fischer & Beatty Law Firm in Fort Collins and continued in 1975 when he began his solo practice, James D. Beatty, P.C., where he worked until his retirement in 1995; and WHEREAS, During Senator Beatty's years in Fort Collins he served his local community in many ways, serving as Rotary President and Elder and General Legal Counsel for the Presbytery of Boulder; volunteering with the United Way, Red Cross Disaster Committee, and Larimer and Colorado Heart Associations; and being the founding director of Fort Collins Youth Baseball; and WHEREAS, From 1980 to 1988 Senator Beatty served in the Colorado State Senate, where he was vice-chairman and chairman of several committees and served on the Local Government, Finance, Agriculture, Judiciary, Business Affairs and Labor, Legal Services, Appropriations, and Joint Budget Committees; and WHEREAS, Those who worked with him during his Senatorial years remember best his commitment to recodifying the wildlife statutes, the deregulation of Mountain Bell, and the distinction between InterLATA and IntraLATA telephone service; and WHEREAS, Senator Beatty had a passion for politics and felt it was each person's privilege and responsibility to serve where needed, and he won numerous awards for his contributions both in the community and while serving as a legislator; and WHEREAS, Senator Beatty was a happy, positive, intelligent, and kind man who loved life and never knew a stranger; and WHEREAS, He loved to sing in the shower, dance at the Safari Room Restaurant, drive fast cars, ski the beautiful mountains of Colorado, play bridge and tennis, and solve problems; and WHEREAS, Senator Beatty was a gifted leader who inspired others to find the best in themselves and to give that best to their family, community, state, and country; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado: That, in the death of Jim Beatty, the people of the state of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends and pay tribute to a man who served his state well and faithfully. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Memorial be sent to Senator Beatty's wife, Mary Beatty, of Greeley; his son, Bruce Beatty of Tucson, Arizona; his daughter, Lila Gronau of Mesquite, Texas; his stepsons Robert Regan and Mike Regan of Greeley; and his brother, Alan Beatty, of Fort Collins. ____________________________ ____________________________ Brandon C.
