CONCERNING RECOGNIZING APRIL 25 THROUGH 29, 2011, AS "COLORADO CHARTER SCHOOLS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF COLORADO. WHEREAS, 2011 marks the 18th anniversary of the signing of Colorado's "Charter Schools Act", part 1 of article 30.5 of title 22, Colorado Revised Statutes; and WHEREAS, Colorado was an early innovator in recognizing the critical role of charter schools for improving public education, having been the third state to enact a charter school law; and WHEREAS, Colorado's "Charter Schools Act" is currently ranked 4th nationally by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools in terms of quality, flexibility, and accountability; and WHEREAS, There are 170 charter schools operating in Colorado, with a combined enrollment of nearly 72,000 students; and WHEREAS, By providing quality education to students, charter schools contribute to the statewide effort to ensure quality instruction in Colorado; and WHEREAS, Charter schools provide the citizens of this state with greater choice in their educational decisions, thus improving the overall quality of public education across Colorado; and WHEREAS, Public charter schools serve a broad diversity of students, including low-income students, racial and ethnic minorities, and students with disabilities and other special needs; and WHEREAS, Charter schools encourage community and parental involvement in the education of Colorado's youth; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the General Assembly, celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of charter schools to public education throughout the state of Colorado; and That we hereby recognize April 25 through 29, 2011, as "Colorado Charter Schools Week".
