MEMORIALIZING FORMER REPRESENTATIVE RAFAEL GALLEGOS. WHEREAS, By the Will of Divine Providence, our beloved former member, Rafael Lorenzo Gallegos, departed this life on May 24, 2010, at the age of 71; and WHEREAS, Representative Gallegos was born on July 15, 1938, and grew up in a small farming community outside Antonito, Colorado; and WHEREAS, After high school, Representative Gallegos joined the Air Force and attended weather school at Chanute Air Force Base; and WHEREAS, Representative Gallegos joined the National Weather Service in 1960 and served in a number of positions, including heading the National Weather Service office in Pueblo, until his retirement in 1994; and WHEREAS, Representative Gallegos earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Colorado and an accounting degree from the North American School of Accounting in San Diego, California; and WHEREAS, After retiring from the National Weather Service and moving back to Antonito, Representative Gallegos served on the Board of Trustees of the town of Antonito and was then appointed mayor in 2003; and WHEREAS, In 2004, Representative Gallegos was elected to the General Assembly as the state representative for House District 62, where he served two terms; and WHEREAS, As a state representative, Representative Gallegos served on the Agriculture, Livestock, and Natural Resources Committee, the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee, the House Services Committee, the 2005 Rural Issues Interim Committee, and the 2006 House Select Committee on Strategic Renewable Energy and was known as an advocate for veterans and the poor; and WHEREAS, Representative Gallegos was well-liked by his colleagues, and he enjoyed giving weather reports in the House of Representatives every Friday before lawmakers traveled back to their districts for the weekend; and WHEREAS, After serving in the legislature, Representative Gallegos served as chair of the Fallen Heroes Memorial Commission established by the General Assembly; and WHEREAS, It is fitting that we, the members of the House of Representatives of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly, pay tribute to the dedicated service of Representative Rafael Gallegos and express our deep regret and sorrow occasioned by his death; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado: That, in the death of Rafael Gallegos, the people of the state of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the House of Representatives of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and pay tribute to a man who served his state well and faithfully.
