CONCERNING ENCOURAGING THE TEACHING OF AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM. WHEREAS, Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America on July 4, 1776, the American form of government and society has served as a beacon of liberty for the rest of the world, occupying a unique role as a paragon of free societies everywhere; and WHEREAS, The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America declared, for the first time in history, that each of us owns our lives by right, that we have a right to live therefore in liberty and be free to pursue those values in life that each of us believes, in our independent judgment, will serve our own safety, happiness, and prosperity; and WHEREAS, The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights, founded on these principles, preserve to United States citizens certain rights, including but not limited to the right to free speech and assembly, the right to bear arms, protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, the right to due process of law, and the right to a jury trial; and WHEREAS, The United States Constitution embraces free-market economic principles as a clear expression of our uniquely American love of self-reliance, personal accountability, freedom, opportunity, and prosperity; and WHEREAS, This capitalist system of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity has created and driven the most powerful and influential national economy in the history of mankind; and WHEREAS, The capitalist system of the United States has created and maintained the most powerful military in the world, upon which hundreds of millions of people across the planet rely to preserve their continued peace and safety; and WHEREAS, The United States has become known around the world as the "land of opportunity", where individuals may achieve and prosper in direct proportion to their own efforts and diligence; and WHEREAS, The national language of the United States, English, has become the primary language of the global economy; and WHEREAS, All of these examples and countless others serve to illustrate the unique and truly exceptional role that the United States has played in world history since its inception; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado: That the House of Representatives hereby encourages the State Board of Education to develop and adopt standards to ensure that each public school student in Colorado can demonstrate competence concerning American exceptionalism and the principles of American liberty before he or she graduates from high school.
