CONCERNING DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF APRIL AS HISTORIC LEADVILLE MONTH. WHEREAS, On April 26, 1860, Abe Lee discovered gold in California Gulch less than five miles from present-day Leadville, Colorado; and WHEREAS, The gold rush that followed Abe Lee's discovery drew prospectors to the mining district and laid the foundation for the "Oro City" settlement, which would become the City of Leadville; and WHEREAS, The subsequent discovery of silver in the nearby Little Pittsburg mine in 1878 brought about the Colorado Silver Boom and attracted several thousand people seeking fortune and adventure; and WHEREAS, The City of Leadville was incorporated in 1878 and by 1880 became one of the world's largest silver camps; and WHEREAS, In 1879, the successful mining prospector and first Leadville Mayor Horace A. W. Tabor built the historic Tabor Opera House that has hosted notable talents such as Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa, Oscar Wilde, Jack Dempsey, and Anna Held; and WHEREAS, In the late 19th and early 20th century, Leadville was home to many well-known Colorado and national historical figures, including former Governor Jesse F. McDonald, Horace and "Baby Doe" Tabor, Margaret Tobin "Unsinkable Molly" Brown, Charles Boettcher, Charles Dow, Benjamin Guggenheim, and John Henry "Doc" Holliday; and WHEREAS, By the late 20th century, the mining district surrounding the City of Leadville was credited with producing over 2.9 million troy ounces of gold, 240 million troy ounces of silver, one million short tons of lead, 785,000 short tons of zinc, 53,000 short tons of copper, and 950,000 short tons of molybdenum; and WHEREAS, The discovery of molybdenum, known as "moly", was made on Bartlett Mountain near the City of Leadville in 1879 and resulted in the development of the world's largest underground mine at Climax in the 1950s; and WHEREAS, The mining of moly in the area surrounding Leadville was the first operation of its kind and continues to contribute to the diverse industries and economy of the City of Leadville; and WHEREAS, The Leadville Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1961 to honor and preserve the original buildings and surrounding mines constructed during the boom years of the late 19th and early 20th century; and WHEREAS, The City of Leadville is home to the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, the only national mining museum with a federal charter, which was passed in a Joint Resolution of the second session of the 100th Congress of the United States and approved by President Ronald Reagan on November 14, 1988; and WHEREAS, Leadville is rich in natural and historical treasures that continue to captivate the imagination and encapsulate the culture of the Wild West; and WHEREAS, The people of Colorado wish to honor and celebrate their state's distinctive history; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-eighth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That the month of April 2011, and each April thereafter, shall be celebrated as Historic Leadville Month. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to Governor John Hickenlooper; Leadville Mayor Bud Elliot; Mike Bordogna, Carl Schaefer, and Dolores Semsack of the Lake County Board of Commissioners; the Board of Directors of the Leadville Assembly; the Board of Directors of the Leadville Historic Society; and to each councilmember of the City of Leadville. ____________________________ ____________________________ Brandon C.
