CONCERNING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COLORADO NATIONAL GUARD. WHEREAS, In January of 1860, the first General Assembly of the Territory of Jefferson met in Denver, passing an act "to authorize the formation of military companies" in the area; and WHEREAS, On February 2, 1860, in their first official action, the Jefferson Rangers mobilized to defeat a gang of thugs in Denver, driving them out; and WHEREAS, In June of 1861, Territorial Governor William Gilpin appointed Richard E. Whitsitt to be the first Adjutant General of the newly established Colorado Territory; and WHEREAS, In the 150 years since its inception, the Colorado National Guard has been prepared for and called upon to serve in every major state, national, and international campaign the United States has undertaken; and WHEREAS, The First Colorado Infantry aided in the defeat of the Texas Confederates in New Mexico at the Battle of Glorieta Pass on March 28, 1862, and the First Colorado Volunteers were the first American soldiers into Manila in the Spanish-American War; and WHEREAS, Members of the Colorado National Guard served in the European and Pacific Theatres during World War II, aiding in the liberation of the Dachau labor camp outside Munich, Germany in 1945, and contributing significantly to the Allied victories in both regions; and WHEREAS, The 120th Fighter Squadron of the Colorado National Guard was the first Air National Guard unit to obtain federal recognition, receiving the honor on June 30, 1946, and, on January 26, 1968, was the first Air National Guard unit to be deployed to Vietnam; and WHEREAS, In 1953, the Colorado Air National Guard formed the Minute Men, a precision aerial flying demonstration team, who, in 1956, were designated by the National Guard Bureau as the official precision aerial flying demonstration team of the Air National Guard; and WHEREAS, The Colorado National Guard has executed multiple relief and rescue operations during blizzards, tornadoes, floods, fires, and other emergencies that have befallen the state of Colorado; and WHEREAS, Since December 2001, the Colorado National Guard has sent over 6,000 soldiers and airmen to Iraq and Afghanistan in defense of our nation and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and WHEREAS, As part of the State Partnership Program established by the United States military, the Colorado National Guard has been paired in bilateral cooperation with the Republic of Slovenia and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and WHEREAS, The Colorado National Guard and its members have selflessly and heroically served their state and their nation for 150 years; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That we, the members of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly, honor the Colorado National Guard in this, its 150th year of service to the state and to the country; and That we salute and appreciate the many generations of men and women who, through their service in the Colorado National Guard, have bravely given their energy and lives to the welfare of all Coloradans and to the protection of the United States and the ideals of peace and democracy for which it stands.
