CONCERNING THE COMMEMORATION OF THE TRI-UTE ELDERS MEETING IN COLORADO IN MARCH 2010, AND, IN CONNECTION THEREWITH, HONORING THE CULTURE AND HERITAGE OF THE SOUTHERN UTE TRIBE, THE UTE MOUNTAIN UTE TRIBE, AND THE NORTHERN UTE TRIBE. WHEREAS, The original inhabitants of North America, American Indians, have played a unique and distinguished role in our nation's history and culture through vital contributions to government, medicine, education, religion, architecture, the environment, and the military; and WHEREAS, The Utes, who have called Colorado and its surrounding states home for centuries, are a confederation of six bands: Capote, Mouache, Uintah, Uncompahgre, Weenuche, and White River; and WHEREAS, Today, the Capote and Mouache bands comprise the Southern Utes; the Weenuche constitute the Ute Mountain Utes; and the other three bands make up the Northern Utes; and WHEREAS, All three Ute Tribes continue to play a vital role in the new energy economy, as energy, wildlife, and conservation are essential for the creation of jobs and financial sustainability for the Ute Tribes' communities; and WHEREAS, The Southern Utes host the Ute Mountain Utes and Northern Utes at an annual spring meeting held in conjunction with the Denver March Powwow to discuss, plan, strategize, and share with each other their progress, issues, and vision for the future of their peoples; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein: That we, the members of the General Assembly, recognize the importance of utilizing the talents, creativity, and experience of the Tribal elders and the major influence on the history of this state that the Ute Nations have provided and continue to provide; and That we recognize Colorado's oldest continuous residents, the Southern Ute Tribe and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, as well as the Northern Ute and all other Tribal Nations and Alaska Native residents in the state; and That we continue to support the two Colorado Ute Tribes in their own efforts to improve public safety, education, health care, and law enforcement on their reservations; and That we celebrate and honor the rich and storied heritage of the Southern Ute Tribe, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and the Northern Ute Tribe who have called Colorado and its neighboring states home for hundreds of years; and That we endeavor to maintain strong, respectful relations between Colorado's state and local governments and the sovereign Indian Nations with whom we share the state. Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to Governor Bill Ritter, Jr., Lieutenant Governor Barbara O'Brien, Chairman Matthew Box of the Southern Ute Tribe, Chairman Ernest House, Sr., of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Chairman Curtis Cesspooch of the Northern Ute Tribe, and each member of Colorado's congressional delegation. ____________________________ ____________________________ Brandon C.
