07:38 AM -- Briefing by the Education Commission of the States

Representative Merrifield called the meeting to order and introduced the people who were providing the briefing from the Education Commission of the States (ECS). A short bio for each of the ECS staff present is attached as Attachment A.

Piedad Robertson, the new President of ECS, came to the table and gave an overview of what ECS does and the products it provides. She discussed several of the special projects at ECS including arts in education, and dual enrollment in high school and higher education.

Kathy Christie, Vice President of ECS Information Management and the ECS Clearinghouse, came to the table and gave a demonstration of the information and materials that are available on the www.ecs.org web site.

The committee commented on what a great resource the ECS web site is, and asked some specific questions about policy areas and whether ECS has done research in these areas. The committee specifically asked about the No Child Left Behind law. President Robertson responded.

Charles Merritt, Director of Government Relations for ECS, stated that there are 49 members states (Washington is the non-member state) that pay membership fees based on the state's population. He referenced the packet of materials that was distributed to the committee that contains a sampling of reports and items that are available from ECS.

Bill Shade, Chief of Staff for ECS, came to the table providing further reassurance that ECS is a resource available to all Colorado legislators.
