01:07 PM -- House Bill 06S-1008

Representative Cadman, prime sponsor, presented an overview of House Bill 06S-1008, concerning criminalizing trespassing in the state while in violation of federal immigration law. Representative Cadman reviewed a number of recent newspaper articles covering the subject of illegal immigration. Representative Cadman discussed current criminal penalties for entering and being present in Colorado in violation of federal immigration law.

[The sponsors of other immigration-related bills before the committee presented their bills. Public testimony on all of the immigration bills was also taken, and the committee recessed for House floor work.]

08:22 PM

Representative Cadman again explained the concept of criminalizing trespassing in Colorado on the basis of a federal immigration violation and reasserted the need for House Bill 06S-1008. The committee discussed the fiscal impact of the bill and the impact of the bill on corrections in Colorado. Representative Cadman responded to questions regarding criminalizing trespassing in violation of federal immigration law at the federal level instead of the state level.

08:33 PM

The committee continued to discuss the enforcement of immigration law at the federal level, versus the state level. No amendments were offered for House Bill 06S-1008.
