01:39 PM -- House Bill 06S-1014

The committee reconvened. Representative Buescher, prime sponsor, presented HB 06S-1014, which requires the Attorney General to pursue remedies to recover moneys owed by the federal government to the state of Colorado for costs incurred by the state to deal with illegal immigration. He responded to questions from the committee and discussed some of the testimony provided by executive directors of state departments to the Joint Budget Committee on July 6, 2006. Discussion ensued on the issue of costs related to immigration.

The following people testified on the bill:

02:10 PM -- Mr. Adrian Miller, representing the Bell Policy Center, spoke in support of the bill and highlighting the role of the federal government in dealing with immigration. He responded to questions from the committee.

02:14 PM --
Mr. George Walker, representing himself, spoke in support of the bill. He believed it is important to find out how much of the shortfall at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center is due to treating illegal immigrants and not being reimbursed by the federal government.

02:18 PM

The chairman closed public testimony, and the committee began considering amendments. Committee members were provided with Amendments L.001 (Attachment D) and L.002 (Attachment E).
