Representative Schultheis, prime sponsor, presented an overview of House Bill 06S-1007, concerning the requirement that an employer apply to participate in the extended federal basic employment verification pilot program for the purpose of determining the work eligibility status of employees. Representative Schultheis explained the operation of the pilot program for which participation is required under the bill.

[The sponsors of other immigration-related bills before the committee presented their bills. Public testimony on all of the immigration bills was also taken, and the committee recessed for House floor work.]

The committee revisited House Bill 06S-1007. Discussion ensued regarding the suitability and efficacy of the federal employment verification pilot program in its current form. Discussion followed regarding the benefit of moving forward with participation in the federal pilot program at the present time. Representative Schultheis responded to questions regarding the threshold of fifty employees that would subject an employer to the requirements of House Bill 06S-1007. No amendments were offered for House Bill 06S-1007.
