Wendell Pryor, Civil Rights Commission, introduced the three new appointees to the commission. There is a fourth appointee who was not available for the meeting. A packet, including letters of appointment and resumes for each new member were distributed to the committee (Attachment A).

Eva Valdez, Civil Rights Commission, spoke about her background as a nurse in Pueblo and her interest in the Civil Rights Commission. She is interested in issues relating to the elderly, latinos, and children. She has experience with health care and the Department of Corrections.

Virginia "Gin" Butler, Civil Rights Commission, discussed her various careers. Ms. Butler worked at U.S. West, ran a nonprofit organization, and owned a publicity firm. She has also done diversity consulting for Governor Owens. Her interests in the area of civil rights include women, women of color, and the elderly. Ms. Butler was also an EEO investigator.

Randy Reed, Civil Rights Commission, is a Castle Rock Councilmember and a business owner. Mr. Reed does not have a specific area of interest with regards to civil rights, but thinks it is in an important issue.

Senator Bacon asked about the process for commission meetings and cases that are brought before the commission. Mr. Pryor discussed the need for confidentiality in their cases. He discussed the appeals process and federal grant funds that allow the commission to hear cases. He also discussed the numbers of cases that end in a settlement.
