The committee continued its consideration of House Bill 06-1150, sponsored by Representative Hefley. Witness testimony continued on House Bill 06-1150, concerning standards within the statewide system of public education. Representative Merrifield reminded the committee that it was continuing public testimony that had not been completed at its meeting on February 7th.

She testified that the bill was against the principle of local control and that her district's calendar reflected the values of the community. She reviewed the specific reasons that her district is opposing the bill.

Jim Snook, representing the Colorado State Fair as a State Fair Commissioner, testified in support of the bill. He indicated the impact of school calendar on participation and attendance at the Colorado State Fair. Mr. Snook responded to questions about the schedule for the state fair.

03:20 PM -- Jane Urschel, representing the Colorado Association of School Boards, testified in opposition to the bill. She said that an academic calendar is essential to student learning.
