Representative Madden, prime sponsor, reviewed the provisions of Senate Bill 06-127, concerning the provision of fresh produce in public schools. She discussed the fact the program was a pilot program to be modeled after the United States Department of Agriculture's Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Program.

The following persons testified:

10:50 AM -- Leo Lesh, representing the Colorado School Nutrition Association, testified in favor of the bill. He discussed the goals of the pilot program and distributed a hand-out (Attachment A). He spoke to the importance of child nutrition and discussed the success of the federal pilot program, in which Colorado is not a participant.

10:55 AM -- Tina Podolak, representing the Colorado Anti-Hunger Network, testified in favor of the bill. She discussed data on child hunger, obesity, and nutrition in Colorado and nationwide. She provided a copy of her statement for the record (Attachment B).

11:02 AM

Representative Madden responded to questions about the appropriations for pilot program out of appropriations for the School Breakfast Program, and to questions regarding the amendments made in the Senate.

11:02 AM -- Erin Bertoli, representing the American Heart Association, testified in favor of the bill. She discussed the importance of reducing childhood obesity to combat heart disease.
